I am going to live together with someone, will I have to pay double the tax?

Are you going to live together with someone? Or is your partner coming to live with you? Then you will still only have to pay the water authority tax once. However, from the time you start living together, you will have to pay higher water treatment charges.

Most households pay 2 types of water authority tax:

  • water system charge for residents
  • water treatment charge

The water system charge for residents is a fixed amount per household. If you start living together, that means the water system charge will not change.

However, the water treatment charge may change if you start living together. See below which situation applies to you.

I am going to live with my partner

  • Have you already received and paid the assessment for this year at your old address? Then you will get back part of the water treatment charge. You will be notified automatically about this.
  • Have you not received the assessment yet for the current year? Then you will still receive an assessment for the water system charge for residents and water treatment charge (1 pollution unit) for your old address.

My partner is going to live with me

  • Have you already received the assessment for the current year? Then nothing will change. From next year onwards, you will pay the water system charge and the water treatment charge (3 pollution units). Your partner will no longer receive an assessment.
  • Have you not received the assessment yet? Then you will pay for 1 pollution unit of the water treatment charge for the period you lived alone. From the date you start living together, you will pay for 3 pollution units of the water treatment charge.

We are going to live together at a new address

  • Have you both already received and paid the assessment for this year at your old address? Then you both will get back part of the water treatment charge. For your new address, one of the partners will receive a new assessment for the water treatment charge (3 pollution units). From the date that you start living together.
  • Have you already received and paid the assessment at your old address? And has your partner not yet received or paid it yet? Then your partner will receive an assessment at your new address.
  • Have you both not yet received an assessment at your old address? Then you will both receive an assessment for your old address. For your new address, one of the partners will receive a new assessment for the water treatment charge (3 pollution units). From the date that you start living together.
