We have noticed that paying via iDeal in My Waternet is not always possible. We are working on a solution.

Work on water mains

Waternet supplies high quality tap water. In order to do so, the water pipes must be up to standard. So, we regularly replace old or weakened water pipes. We also regularly flush the water pipes, especially if we believe that natural sediment may have built up inside them. Unfortunately this may affect you. You will receive a letter or postcard before the work starts, which will detail the date of the work and the streets affected.

Where are we currently working?

The ‘maintenance and service interruption’ page shows where we are currently carrying out work.

Cloudy or brown water

In order to carry out work on the water mains Waternet sometimes may shut off the water supply for short periods of time. After we have finished flushing, the water may look different:

  • Cloudy water (with air bubbles)
  • Brown water (with miniscule iron sediments)

Even though your water is not clear, it is still safe to drink.

How will I know when Waternet intends to shut off the water supply?

Do we shut off the water supply for planned work? You will receive a postcard with the date and times in your mailbox usually 2 business day before we start working.

Usually, your water supply will be shut off between 7.00 and 15.00. Please make sure that you have a supply of drinking water. Sometimes, we have to shut off the water main unexpectedly. If the water main is leaking or a pipe has burst we need to start repairs immediately. A sound truck will alert you.

Apartments

In many apartment buildings, a central system controls the water pressure. This system stops working when the water is shut off. The building manager needs to turn the system back on after we have finished working.

How will I know when Waternet intends to flush the water mains?

You will receive a letter before flushing starts, which will detail the date of the work and the streets affected. A sound truck will alert you on the day that we will actually flush the water mains. The flushing happens on business days between 8.00 and 16.00. Water main flushing is the process of cleaning or “scouring” the interior of water distribution mains (pipes) by sending a rapid flow of water through the mains.

Tips on what you should not do when the work is being done

  • Do not use your washing machine or dish washer.
  • Make sure you have a supply of drinking water.
  • Do not flush the toilet.

Tips on what you should do after the work is done

  • Run all of your taps for a few minutes. Keep on doing this until the water becomes clear again
  • Check all of your water saving taps and shower heads. Also check the devices with filter. For example, water purification devices. The water can still contain iron sediments and these can clog the filters.

As little inconvenience as possible

We will do our best to ensur as little inconvenience as possible. Therefore, we usually replace the water pipes when the municipality is also working in your area. For example, when the municipality is renewing the road surface or pavement (sidewalk). You will always be able to reach your home and/or store. So will the firefighters, police and ambulance.
