I am a tenant. How much water authority tax do I have to pay?

As a tenant, you have to pay water authority taxes every year. The amount you have to pay depends on how many people live at the address.

For tenants, the water authority tax is made up of 2 amounts:

  • water system charge for residents
  • water treatment charge

The water system charge for residents is a fixed amount per property. The amount of the water treatment charge depends on the number of people in the household. You pay 1 pollution unit if you live by yourself, and 3 pollution units if you do not live alone. Why do you have to pay 3 units of pollution even though you are living with just the 2 of you?

Will you be living alone during the year at some point? Then we will automatically lower the amount on your water authority tax assessment.

Student renting a room

Are you a student renting a room? Whether you receive a water authority tax assessment depends on your situation.

Are you living in self-contained accommodation?

Then you will receive a water authority tax assessment.

Are you living with other students and are you all living in self-contained accommodation?

The student who has been registered at the address the longest will receive the water authority tax assessment from us. Please make the necessary arrangements with the other residents so that you can share the costs fairly.

Are you living in a room with the property owner, or in a student flat and are you living together in self-contained accommodation?

Then you will not receive a water authority tax assessment. We will send the water authority tax assessment to the owner of the property or building.

Explanation: what is self-contained accommodation?

A self-contained accommodation is a home or property with a private doorway that the tenant can lock from both the inside and the outside. The living space includes:

  • a private living room (bedroom)
  • a private kitchen with sink, water supply and drainpipe and a connection point for a cooker
  • a toilet with a water flushing system

Owner receives a separate assessment

As a tenant, you do not own the property or building. The owner receives a separate water authority tax assessment from us. This is because the owner has to pay a water system charge for buildings. The amount depends on the WOZ (immovable property) value of the house or property. The owner must also pay a water treatment charge for businesses.
