How many litres of water are flushed down the shower drain?

We use an average of 141 litres of tap water per person per day. Of that, about 60 litres per shower is flushed down the drain. What a waste, right? By taking smarter showers, you can easily save water. How exactly?

  • Take shorter showers

It sounds very simple, and it actually is: take shorter showers. The shorter the time you shower, the more water you save. Because on average, we spend almost 8 minutes under the shower. That is quite a long time. Even showering for 5 minutes can feel just as nice, though. For example, use a shower timer or an hourglass. These help you take shorter showers.
  • Use a water-saving shower head

With a water-saving shower head, you can easily save 20 litres of water when you shower. Without you even noticing!
  • Turn off the tap when lathering up with soap and shaving

Turn off the tap briefly when you lather up with soap or shave. You can easily save water this way. If you do this, you will soon be showering for one minute less each time.
  • Turn the shower down to a lower temperature or even set it to cold

By turning the shower down to a lower temperature or even the cold setting, you will automatically shower for a shorter time.
  • Set a bucket under the shower

Sometimes it takes a while for your shower to heat up. Catch the cold water in a bucket. This water is perfectly suitable for flushing the toilet or for use in the garden.
  • Repair leaky taps

A drip here, a drip there. Often a leaky tap or shower head may seem harmless, but without realising it, you could be flushing away thousands of litres a year. Such a waste!
