I am getting a water meter, what happens now?
You have received a letter from us telling you that you are going to have a water meter installed. You can find out more about your water meter, the meter reading and what you have to pay here.
The municipality of Amsterdam has decided to install water meters in Amsterdam, Diemen and Muiden.
The most important reasons for this are:
- You only pay for the water you actually use.
- You will conserve water thanks to the water meter.
Where will Waternet install my water meter?
This depends on the situation in your home. We usually install it in one of the following locations:
- meter cupboard
- central heating cupboard
Alternatively, we can also install it in:
- the toilet, kitchen or bathroom
- the crawl space by the front door or back door
- outdoor water source
What will I be paying?
You do not pay your annual tap water bill in one lump sum. Instead, you pay an estimated amount upfront: an advance payment. Meanwhile, your water meter will keep track of your exact water usage.
Once a year, we ask you to submit your tap water meter reading. Afterwards you will receive your final annual tap water statement.
- Did you pay for more than you used? You will then be refunded the difference.
- Did you pay for less than you used? You will then be asked to pay the remaining amount to us. We will send you a bill for that.
Check our page on tap water costs to see the rates. This page also includes information on how we calculate the amount of your bill.
Do you want a water meter but have not yet received a letter?
